Edmonton Oilers Cut Brossoit, Others and Trim Roster to 30

The Edmonton Oilers announced more roster cuts Wednesday, as the opening night roster is coming more into focus. Edmonton has assigned Laurent Brossoit, Jordan Oesterle and Dillon Simpson to the Bakersfield Condors, the team announced Tuesday.
This means that Cam Talbot and Jonas Gustavsson will be the Oilers’ goaltending tandem. While Brossoit put up strong performances during camp, he is not yet ready for a full-time job in the NHL. An extra year in the AHL will do him well, and further development will only make him stronger.

The Oilers’ cuts also indicate a projection of the Oilers defensive corps. They have 10 defenders remaining on the NHL roster, with Eric Gryba, Griffin Reinhart and Matthew Benning vying for the final spot. Andrew Ference remains on the roster, but is on the LTIR and announced his plans to retire.
Brandon Davidson remains day-to-day, and if his injury continues into next week, another defender could stay up. Gryba seems the most likely to crack the NHL roster, considering he is the readiest for the NHL and has put up a strong performance during camp. He is on a PTO but honestly, should have been given a contract with the club.
Matthew Benning is a dark horse at this point but has shown flashes of persistence and physicality at times. He has looked better than Reinhart, but given Reinhart’s seniority and ability on the left side, he might get to stay up while Davidson recovers.
In the end, the Oilers roster looks solid so far, and this team is ready to turn a new leaf this season.
