In case you missed it, you can check out last week’s review of the first segment of games before taking a look at the second segment.

Coming in to the season, all the Detroit Red Wings talk was on the playoff streak. Do the Red Wings have enough pieces to make it 26 straight seasons? Should they go for it or start the rebuilding process? Well, who would have thought we would now have another streak to discuss? After the first two abysmal games of 2016-17, the Wings ripped off six straight wins, their most since January of 2015. And already, the Red Wings wrapped up Jeff Blashill’s second segment.

Game 6, vs. San Jose, W 3-0: Jimmy Howard was rewarded for his excellent debut in New York with another start against San Jose. He definitely did not disappoint–recording the Wings’ first shutout of the year. Gus Nyquist continues to be sensational; he netted two goals in the second period.

Game 7, vs. Carolina, W 4-2: Another solid win, as the Wings seemed to simply outskate the Hurricanes. With his family in attendance, Dylan Larkin was a goal short of a hat trick for his first two scores of the year.

Game 8, at St. Louis, W 2-1 (SO): Usually, I dread shoot outs. The Red Wings have been dreadful in shoot outs in recent years. Signing Frans Nielsen, with his 52% career average on shoot outs, consequently did a little to alleviate my concerns. This time, however, Nyquist and ultimately Henrik Zetterberg secured the win in this stressful 16-player finale–the first shoot out of the season. Once again, Petr Mrazek looked like a stone wall.

Game 9, vs. Boston, L 1-0: Usually allowing only one goal should give the team enough to win. As Howard would learn, however, one goal was all the Bruins would need to get a win. Due to the Red Wings’ very few scoring chances, this turned out to be a heartbreaking way to end an early winning streak.

Game 10, vs. Florida, L 5-2: The ugliest game of this second segment, and possibly of the season as yet. Mrazek gave up four goals in 25 minutes before giving way to Howard. The Wings have lost to the division-rival Panthers twice now in the first ten games.

There was a lot to like after the second segment, so it’s easy to get over-excited. More often than not, opponents lead the Wings in shots on goal, but the goaltenders continue to be superb. If the team can continue putting together what we have seen for these first ten games, this may be a more fun season than anyone anticipated.

As a result, after ten games, the Red Wings have twelve points, exactly on pace with Blashill’s hope. The Wings put together some impressive wins, while benefiting from several nights at home. They also dropped two at home, including one–the Bruins at home–that they could have won. The next five will see home games against Winnipeg, Vancouver, and Edmonton, as well as two games in Philadelphia. LGRW.
