Desjardins impatient to get going after hip surgery
Canucks coach Willie Desjardins is one of the names on the team's injured list, as the coach is limited in his current duties following Sept. 8 hip surgery. Desjardins was originally slated to return in October and was not scheduled to be around much during training camp, but the coach said he is struggling to stick to doctors' orders.
"It’s a progress and the doctors want me to go through it a little slower than I want to," Desjardins said to the Vancouver Province. "They have the final say. We talked about Calgary (Friday) and I think I’m flying, but they’ll have the last say."
The Canucks are scheduled to play a preseason game Friday against the Flames. The Province reported that Desjardins was spotted walking around with the aid of a cane at a Canucks' practice on Wednesday, so it will clearly take some more time before the coach is able to return to the ice with his time, but his presence alone will likely be a helpful boost ahead of the start of the season.
The Province also noted that Desjardins is attending practice as much as possible in person in order to create a better evaluation of players as well as to help get to know the new players on the team. The Canucks open their regular season schedule on Oct. 7 against Calgary.
