Canadiens deal Ryan O'Byrne to Colorado

Published Nov. 11, 2010 12:00 a.m. ET

The Montreal Canadiens have traded defenseman Ryan O'Byrne to the Colorado Avalanche for forward Michael Bournival.

O'Byrne becomes a restricted free agent this summer and the deal trims $1.4 million from Montreal's payroll.

The 6-foot-5 O'Byrne has no points in three games with the Canadiens this season. He was Montreal's third-round pick in the 2003 NHL draft.

Bournival is 18 and leads the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's Shawinigan Cataractes with 24 points in 17 games this season. He was selected by the Avalanche in the third round of this year's draft.
