Buffalo Sabres - NHL 17 Player Ratings, the Defense and Goaltending

The Buffalo Sabres have an improved team in this years EA Sports hockey game, NHL 17. In this post we will take a look at the player ratings given to the Buffalo Sabres defense and goaltending.
The Buffalo Sabres are the victim of some misguided NHL 17 player ratings. This shouldn’t come as a surprise to any regular fan of the EA Sports series. It’s highly likely our team is not the only victim of some puzzling player ratings choices, however the Sabres will be the focus of this article. In this post I will identify the ratings given to our starting defensemen and top two goaltenders. Hopefully you agree with some of the thoughts I provide on what should be changed.
Ratings for the Buffalo Sabres defense and goaltending
Defense
Dmitry Kulikov – 85 Rasmus Ristolainen – 87
Josh Gorges – 84 Zach Bogosian – 85
Jake McCabe – 80 Cody Franson – 83
Casey Nelson – 77
Goaltending
Robin Lehner – 84
Anders Nilsson – 80
Thoughts and suggested changes
In my opinion EA Sports wasn’t too far off on the majority of player ratings that we see above. The defense for the Buffalo Sabres isn’t drastically different than what we saw last year, so most of the ratings listed are close to what was expected. The ratings given to Ristolainen, Bogosian, and Kulikov are pretty close to realistic.
Josh Gorges and Cody Franson are rated just a touch too high in my opinion. I wouldn’t say they’re off by any significant margin though. It was a bit disappointing to see Jake McCabe rated so low, I was expecting to see him at least on par with the rating given to Gorges. Casey Nelson also deserves a slight bump. His limited play last season was surprisingly impressive. I’m looking forward to watching him develop further.
Now some of you may disagree with me, but I feel that Robin Lehner deserves a slight increase in his rating as well. Although Lehner was injured for some time, his play when healthy was well above average, and his rating should at least partially reflect that. Nilsson is a bit of an unknown for me, I will have to give it some time before passing judgement on his rating.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the ratings given to the Buffalo Sabres players by EA Sports. In my next post I will cover the ratings given to our forwards.
Thank you as always for reading. Here is another reminder that I am open to any post ideas and questions you may have. I look forward to hearing from you, thanks again!
