Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs: Peter Chiarelli fired for not 'making changes'

Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs apparently doesn't need much time to change his mind. Less than one year after Jacobs called then-Boston GM Peter Chiarelli one of the best in the business, Jacobs and the Bruins' ownership group fired Chiarelli for not handing over control of the roster, CSN New England reported.

Jacobs shifted much of the blame for Chiarelli's firing over to his son, Charlie Jacobs, and Bruins president Cam Neely, but he told CSN New England that he also recognized it was time for a change.

"When I recognized [Chiarelli] wasn’t prepared to make the changes that needed to be made, but that wasn’t so much my recognition as it was Cam and Charlie’s," Jacobs told CSN New England of deciding when to fire Chiarelli. "That’s their leadership that you have to talk to."

After letting go of Chiarelli and replacing him with Don Sweeney, the Bruins made a series of bold moves, trading away up-and-coming defenseman Dougie Hamilton and long-time Bruin Milan Lucic while adding Matt Beleskey and Jimmy Hayes to the team.

Chiarelli, meanwhile, quickly found a new job with the Edmonton Oilers, and Jacobs said he believes Edmonton will provide a better environment for Chiarelli.

"I think Peter is a great human being and a great hockey mind," Jacobs told CSN New England. "I think he’s going to prosper out west. He’s got a great young team there. We were not in the same position."
