Blue Jackets reportedly pick Foligno as captain

Published May. 19, 2015 11:58 p.m. ET

The Blue Jackets' three-year stretch without a captain has come to an end. According to numerous media reports, Nick Foligno has been selected as the sixth captain in franchise history and will be announced as such at a news conference Wednesday morning. The announcement is scheduled for 11 a.m. Eastern time and can be viewed on FOXSportsOhio.com.

Foligno was a first-time All-Star this past season, representing the Blue Jackets at the game in Columbus and being selected as one of the two team captains. He finished the season with career highs in goals with 31, assists with 42 and points with 73. The 27-year-old signed a six-year, $33 million contract extension during the season

While it was unclear when the Blue Jackets would finally name a captain, the selection of Foligno is not particularly surprising. According to the Columbus Dispatch, team president John Davidson said earlier this month that "He’s popped,” referring to Foligno's role on the team. “He’s a person that’s carried himself with outstanding leadership.”

It is not yet know which players, or even how many, will be chosen as alternate captains.
