- PARIS - Sloane Stephens loses to fourth-seeded Simona Halep of Romania 6-4, 6-3 in the fourth round, leaving no American singles players in the French Open.

- AURORA, Colo. - For all the buzz about California Chrome's run toward the Triple Crown, horse racing numbers crunchers say the colt's too-good-to-be-true story has virtually no chance of repeating itself.

- LOS ANGELES - Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer had long been the software giant's biggest cheerleader. With a $2 billion deal to buy the Clippers, he's expected to bring that boosterism to Los Angeles.

- LOS ANGELES - The Stanley Cup will be won on the NHL's two biggest stages for the first time when the Los Angeles Kings play the New York Rangers starting Wednesday.

- INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Pacers will have Frank Vogel back next season, and the coach believes a roster overhaul is unnecessary to win a championship.

- HARRISON, N.J. - U.S. striker Jozy Altidore is scoreless in 27 club and national team games since Dec. 4. His coach and teammates suspect that's about to change as the World Cup nears.

- A vice president of soccer's governing body denies allegations he received favors for backing Qatar to host the 2022 World Cup in a vote already marred by accusations of corruption.

- CLEVELAND - The Red Sox, winners of seven straight, begin a three-game series with the Indians. Boston's streak follows a 10-game skid, its longest in 20 years. Game starts 7:05 p.m.

- COLUMBUS, Ohio - Several major champions are among those attempting to make it the U.S. Open in 10 days at Pinehurst. They play in 36-hole sectional qualifiers at several sites.

- TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona Cardinals go back to work, their first gathering since the yearlong suspension of standout linebacker Daryl Washington for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

- BATAVIA, N.Y. - Jim Kelly established a foundation in honor of a son who died of a rare disorder. Now the Hall of Fame quarterback needs support in his yearlong battle with jaw and sinus cancer.
