Defenseman Adam Foote has left Colorado's game against the San Jose Sharks with a head injury suffered during the first period.
The Avalanche say Foote will not return.
The 39-year-old team captain played nearly seven minutes in the opening period Thursday night.
Foote entered the game needing one point to become the top-scoring defenseman in franchise history. He's currently tied with Sandis Ozolinsh with 253 points.
