John-Michael Liles of the Colorado Avalanche set an NHL record among defensemen by earning an assist for a ninth straight game to start a season.
Liles helped set up Daniel Winnik's second-period goal Tuesday night in Colorado's 4-3 overtime loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night. Liles broke the mark set by Ottawa's Philip Kuba at the start of the 2008-09 season.
Brad Park of the Boston Bruins held the record of seven from 1981 until Montreal's Andrei Markov tied it in 2008 and Kuba surpassed it in the same season.
