Will Beatty Returning to Help the New York Giants Offensive Line
Despite not playing since 2014, Will Beatty is returning to the New York Giants
A long-time contributor to the New York Giants recent success is returning to the Big Apple to help a young offensive line. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the New York Giants will re-sign offensive tackle Will Beatty to a one-year deal worth $1.1 million.
Beatty was the Giants second round draft pick in 2009 out of UConn, and started 63 games at left tackle. He was the primary protector of Eli Manning’s blind side throughout the Giants Super Bowl XLVI run.
The 31-year-old offensive tackle was starting to become a hot commodity in free agency. Multiple teams including the Philadelphia Eagles, Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers, and Jacksonville Jaguars. Beatty worked out for the Jaguars in mid-August, and also declined workouts with the Oakland Raiders and Denver Broncos as he was recovering from surgery.
In May of 2015, Beatty tore his pectoral muscle while lifting weights, forcing him to the sidelines to start offseason programs. Last November Beatty underwent surgery on his rotator cuff, ending his 2015 season before it started.
Former first round pick Ereck Flowers is still expected to start the season as the Giants starting left tackle, but many suggest Beatty could transition to right tackle. This would push out Marshall Newhouse as the starter on the right side.
The Giants start their season in Arlington against the Dallas Cowboys at 4:25 E.T.
