Washington Redskins Injuries: DT Kedric Golston Heading To IR
Kedric Golston suffered an injury that will sideline him for the rest of the 2016 season. What will that mean for the Redskins defensive line?
The Washington Redskins got a major injury scare on Sunday afternoon against the Dallas Cowboys. Just a few plays into the game, their starting nose tackle Kedric Golston went down with a hamstring injury. He had to be helped off the field and was declared out for the game shortly thereafter. The team got more bad news about the Golston injury on Monday, when it was declared that the veteran would be placed on injured reserve to end his season, per CSN’s Rich Tandler.

As a result, the Redskins made a corresponding roster move to add 2016 fifth round draft pick Matt Ioannidis to the active roster. Ioannidis plays the same position as Golston, but the rookie looked like he needed a lot of development after a mediocre showing in the preseason. He is a big bodied individual, but he needs to learn how to face NFL linemen before he can be a very effective pro.

Still, it appears as though the Redskins will be content to roll with Ioannidis as their replacement on the roster. He may end up playing as a backup, and in all likelihood Ziggy Hood will take over as the everyday starter at the nose. Ricky Jean-Francois will take over at left end for Hood, and that will make Cullen Jenkins and Kendall Reyes the primary backups for the team. Jenkins may end up backing up Hood at nose tackle if Ioannidis is not ready to contribute immediately.
This injury will hurt the Redskins, but not as much as one would initially think. The Redskins already had a weak run defense with Golston in the lineup. Losing him will allow them to experiment with playing younger guys like Ioannidis and Anthony Lanier. It will not be ideal to be without him in a playoff run, but right now the Skins do not look like they are postseason bound.
As a result, the Redskins can shift around their defensive line at will and get a good look at the personnel they have. After that, they can decide who will be best to keep on the unit in the coming years. Losing Golston will definitely hinder the team short term, but it may not be a long term disservice to them.
