John Elway has done a great job with his Denver Broncos to date. But hiring Vance Joseph as his next head coach was a curious move.
Vance Joseph has been hired to be the Denver Broncos head coach.
Who?
As a player and a GM, we all know John Elway has always played to win for the Denver Broncos. And since he’s become the Broncos GM, he has pressed all the right buttons to date. But the last button he pressed is one anyone can call into question.
Joseph just left his post as the defensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins for the gig. That year he spent in Miami was his first as a coordinator at any level. Before that, he was a defensive backs coach with the San Francisco 49ers, Houston Texans and Cincinnati Bengals.
In one year as a coordinator, Joseph’s defense was No. 29 in yardage and No. 18 in points. That’s not exactly a resume that says a man is ready to go from coordinator to head coach. This reminds me of when the Oakland raiders hired Dennis Allen as head coach.
Allen didn’t have the talent that Joseph will have with the Broncos this year but it didn’t go so well. It was a good move when Elway went with John Fox as his head coach. And when they were ousted from the playoffs in 2014, he fired him in favor of Gary Kubiak.
No one can dispute that move as they went from playoff elimination to winning the Super Bowl. Then after Kubiak understandably resigns with health issues, Elway chooses Joseph. He’s handing a Super Bowl team over to a guy that doesn’t have the greatest resume or experience.
Does Elway believe this is a win now situation?
Are the Broncos falling back and rebuilding?
This is a curious move!
