Umenyiora likely to return to practice

Osi Umenyiora does not need immediate surgery on his left knee and should be able to finally hit the practice field next week after the Giants return from Saturday night's preseason opener at Carolina.
Umenyiora on Thursday traveled to Atlanta seeking a second opinion and was told what the Giants' medical staff has been saying: The issue with his knee can be managed through rest.
"We were hoping it would be the same recommendation the Giants gave us," said Tony Agnone, Umenyiora's agent. "I think you're always happy about that."
Agnone said "I'm hoping" that Umenyiora will practice Monday. Ever since the start of training camp, he's hopped on a stationary bicycle for some exercise and then watched the remainder of practice. On Wednesday, Umenyiora worked off to the side on some pass-rush moves.
"We expect him to be back in the fold," general manager Jerry Reese said. "There's still some issues we're trying to resolve, but we expect him to be back."
Those issues, of course, are the much-publicized contract squabble Umenyiora and the team are involved in. Umenyiora does not want to play for his current contract of $3.1 million for this season and asked to be traded. No takers were found for the Giants' demands of a first-round draft pick.
Asked whether Umenyiora has any unresolved issues with the Giants, Agnone said, "None that will affect his performance."
