Three head coaching candidates the Chargers could consider in 2016

Mike McCoy led the Chargers to the playoffs two-and-a-half seasons ago.

But since his first year, the head coach has seen his team devolve from dangerous AFC West power to injury-riddled underachiever. He'll probably be held responsible for that decline after 2015.

If the axe falls, here are three potential fits the Bolts could consider for next fall.

1. Hue Jackson, Bengals offensive coordinator: Jackson, the former Raiders' head coach, is plenty familiar with Philip Rivers. Now he could be just the mind needed to get Rivers and his team over the hump. He's coached secondary and special teams for Marvin Lewis in Cincy. His new employer would put him to work fixing both aspects of the team right away.

2. David Shaw, Stanford head coach: San Diego's offensive line is in shambles. Its first round pick, Melvin Gordon, could end up as a running back bust. Who better to fix both issues than a current Californian who plays tough-nosed ball up north in college?

3. Sean McDermott, Panthers defensive coordinator: The Bolts' defense has been injured and abysmal all season long. Enter McDermott, who's turned the Panthers into a real juggernaut with Peanut Tillman and Roman Harper as starters. Manti Te'o and Denzel Perryman could be McDermott's next dynamic linebacking pair.
