Sean Payton talks fourth-and-20 blitz, says it was his call
The New Orleans Saints may have dropped their preseason opener to the Baltimore Ravens 30-27, but there were multiple talking points from the game. One of them, as Mike Triplett of ESPN points out, is the fact that the Saints chose to blitz on a fourth-and-20 with 45 seconds left, while holding a four-point lead.
Apparently, the call was one made by head coach Sean Payton, not defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. Payton spoke about the play a bit after the game.
"Fourth down and 20, that was my call, we blitzed 'em," Payton told ESPN. "Obviously they were able to make a play and continue the drive."
It was definitely a big call, but obviously with this being the preseason, it's not going to be talked about as much moving forward. If Payton had made this call during the season though, you could likely expect it to be a massive talking point.
