Seahawks waive draftee Scott after rare heart condition uncovered

The Seattle Seahawks have waived tackle Garrett Scott under a non-football illness designation after the rookie failed to pass his physical, the team said Friday. 

Medical tests uncovered a rare heart condition that put the 6-foot-4, 307 pound 22-year-old's playing ability into question, the Seahawks announced. 

"After undergoing an extensive physical with our medical staff last week, Garrett's examination revealed a rare heart condition that will prevent him from any on-field participation in the near future," Seahawks executive VP and general manager John Schneider said. "We think highly of Garrett as a person and as a football player. The team is committed to supporting Garrett in the months to come and will continue to help him determine his next steps."

This came a day after Scott, who was selected in the 6th round (199th overall) by the Seattle team in this month's NFL Draft, had signed his rookie contract. 

The Douglas, Georgia, native attended Marshall University and was voted All-Conference USA second-team after his senior season.
