Seahawks vs Bills by the numbers: a prediction

The data suggests the both the Seattle Seahawks and the Buffalo Bills will have trouble scoring when the face off on Monday Night Football.

The Seattle Seahawks stumbling back home to take on the surging Buffalo Bills. After two straight disjointing results, they will now try and right the ship against an always-unpredictable Rex Ryan squad.

Here are how the teams stack up against each other, in terms of where they rank statistically within the NFL:

When the Seahawks have the ball

Seahawks Category Bills
29th Points per game 13th
30th Yards per carry 14th
10th Yards per pass 27th
4th Turnovers 9th
7th Sacks 1st

What jumps out here is just how bad Seattle’s offense has been this year. They simply cannot get the run game going, and it is killing their ability to score points.

The Bills defense hasn’t been great, especially against the pass. They lead the league in sacks, but if the pass rushers don’t get home then the secondary gives up huge chunks of yards.

The problem for Seattle is that their offensive tackles are so bad. The chances that the Seahawks can slow down the Bills’ pass rush long enough to take advantage of that secondary is rather low.

This matchup has the makings of another poor offensive game for the Seahawks.

When the Bills have the ball

Seahawks Category Bills
2nd Points per game 8th
4th Yards per carry 1st
13th Yards per pass 28th
24th Turnovers 1st
3rd Sacks 23rd

The Bills have the league’s best running game, but also have one of the league’s worst passing attacks. That’s a good matchup for the Seahawks.

The Seahawks are very good at stopping the run. They also have the CBs necessary to commit extra  defenders near the line without giving up big plays. The Seahawks will be loading up the line to stop the run and force the Bills to try and beat them through the air.

Buffalo also gives up a lot of sacks when they do try to throw the ball. Cliff Avril and company will be teeing off to get after the QB.

Prediction

Neither offense has a good matchup this week. Points will be very hard to come by for both teams. Both of these teams are also very good at protecting the football, so a turnover isn’t likely to swing the game in one direction or the other.

The Seahawks are at home, and they have the weapons to cause Buffalo’s secondary some major issues. It will only take a few big plays to produce a favorable outcome for Seattle, and I think they have that in them.
