Seahawks place LB Mike Morgan on Injured Reserve

The Seattle Seahawks have placed starting strong side linebacker Mike Morgan on injured reserve. He will have surgery for a sports hernia on Tuesday.

The Seattle Seahawks got some unexpected bad news today. Mike Morgan, the team’s strong side linebacker, will be placed on injured reserve with a sports hernia.

Morgan was listed on the injury report last week with a hip injury. Apparently, he also had hernia problem, and it worsened during the game.

Morgan stayed behind when the team travelled home last night. Instead, he made the sort trip to Philadelphia to see renowned specialist Dr. William Meyers. You might remember that Dr. Meyers was the one who operated on Marshawn Lynch last season.

Landing on IR doesn’t mean that Morgan’s season is over. He’s a candidate to return after 8 games. Teams can pull one player off of injured reserve each season. They no longer have to designate who that player might be ahead of time.

Taking Morgan’s spot on the roster will be Jordan Tripp. Tripp has been on the practice squad all season after he was released by the Jaguars before Week 1.

Jacksonville thought they could slip the athletic Tripp onto their practice squad, but the Seahawks poached him and brought him to Seattle. Now he’ll get a chance to contribute, though likely it will only be on special teams for now.

Morgan is listed as the starter, but he’s never played a starter’s snaps. The Seahawks have spent almost 75% of their snaps in the nickel this season, which pulls the SAM LB off the field.

Replacing Morgan’s snaps will be done by committee. Kevin Pierre-Louis will hand the few snaps there there might be coverage responsibilities. Cassius Marsh will take the snaps when the plan is to rush the passer or play the run.

The Seahawks also announced that DT Quinton Jefferson will have surgery for a broken bone in his hand. He is expected to return in 2-3 weeks.
