Scooby Wright to Join the Cardinals

The Cardinals are signing linebacker Scooby Wright from the Browns.

The Cardinals season might be all but over, but they continue to make moves with an eye on the future. After rumors circulated on Monday night, ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed that linebacker Scooby Wright has been signed by Arizona from the Cleveland Browns practice squad.

A 7th round selection in this year’s NFL Draft, Wright has spent the season on the Browns practice squad without seeing any action. The Cardinals will have to sign him to the active roster, but that seems to be something they are willing to do.

This is a homecoming for Wright, who played his college ball at the University of Arizona. He was highly productive, and highly decorated as a member of the Wildcats. In his Sophomore year, he earned the Bronko Nagurski Award, the Chuck Bednarik Award, the Vince Lombardi Award, was an All-American, and was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year. Injuries limited him in 2015, and he left for the NFL after that season.

Wright didn’t wow scouts in his pre-draft workouts, and the fact that he was coming off an injury didn’t help his draft status. He fell all the way to round seven, and hasn’t been able to find his way onto the field. Still, his production, when healthy, is undeniable, and he might get some work in the Cardinals final three games, so head coach Bruce Arians can evaluate what he has. Arians was a big fan of Wright, and wanted to sign him if he had gone undrafted.
