Sanchez could be game-time decision

Published Dec. 23, 2010 12:00 a.m. ET

The cartilage tear in quarterback Mark Sanchez’s throwing shoulder is more serious than the New York Jets originally thought, the New York Post reported Thursday.

Sanchez is now expected to be a game-time decision on Sunday against the Bears, according to head coach Rex Ryan. For the second straight practice, Sanchez only lobbed the ball, not putting too much zip on his throws.

Ryan backed off Wednesday's statement, in which he said his quarterback would have been able to play that day. Ryan said Thursday that he "misspoke" and that the team trainer pointed out that Sanchez's injury is more serious than he had conveyed to the media.

Sanchez was even more confident than his coach on Wednesday.

"I'm playing, that's all there is to it," Sanchez said. "I have to be on the field. That's what I'm here for, and that's what I'm going to do."

But it might not be Sanchez’s decision alone. Ryan confirmed that 40-year-old Mark Brunell will get the start if Sanchez cannot go.

If the Jets win in Chicago they would clinch a spot in the playoffs.
