San Diego could sweeten their stadium deal for the Chargers
The Chargers are going to have to decline a pretty sweet deal if they leave for Los Angeles.
A $1.1 billion stadium deal offers new and improved incentives for the team, according to San Diego County supervisor Ron Roberts. And even more might be on the table if owner Dean Spanos hears them out.
Roberts, via the Mighty 1090 AM:
“I think what you’re saying is if there are ways that this deal could be enhanced, and I think the answer to that is yes. But we can’t do it when we’re talking to ourselves. Look, we’re entering a whole new phase. We saw in the first phase that the Chargers wanted to do everything possible to deliver the vote where they would have been the [Stan] Kroenke of L.A. And that didn’t happen."
Roberts and mayor Kevin Faulconer believe the negotiating landscape is different now. A $100 influx from the NFL gives San Diego some breathing room to compete with L.A. And the league won't impose an exorbitant relocation fee if the franchise never leaves.
Spanos will be the most popular man in "America's Finest City" if the Chargers stay. The next few days are critical ones for the city and team to talk.
