Saints release RB C.J. Spiller after one season

New Orleans Saints running back C.J. Spiller has been released, according to ESPN's Field Yates.

Spiller is coming off a season in which he recorded 112 yards on 36 carries and added another 34 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns. Spiller was in the second year of a four-year contract worth $16 million.

Spiller was inactive for the Saints' season opener against the Oakland Raiders. He spent the first five seasons of his career with the Buffalo Bills after being drafted in the first round of the 2010 NFL draft.

The Saints have Mark Ingram, Tim Hightower and Marcus Murphy on the depth chart as running backs.
