Revis misses practice with groin injury, uncertain for Sunday

Revis Island was closed Wednesday. The New York Jets are hoping their star cornerback is back in business by Sunday.

Darrelle Revis sat out practice with a groin injury, and his status for the team's game against the Philadelphia Eagles is uncertain.

Coach Todd Bowles did not mention Revis' injury at his news conference after practice Wednesday, and was not asked about the cornerback by reporters. Revis' status was not known publicly until the team released its injury report after locker room availability.

It was not immediately known if Revis' groin was simply just sore or if it's a more serious ailment. A team spokesman said Bowles was not expected to address the injury until Thursday.

Revis did not appear hindered in any way as he walked through the locker room following practice.

Revis was selected the AFC defensive player of the week earlier in the day after recovering two fumbles and had an interception Monday night in New York's 20-7 win at Indianapolis.

When asked on a conference call Tuesday if any players other than Eric Decker (knee) were hurt Monday, Bowles mentioned only receiver Chris Owusu (knee). The coach was not asked Wednesday to provide a list of all the players who didn't practice.

Decker will be evaluated throughout the week, but his availability is also in question. Bowles acknowledged that "it's possible" the wide receiver will not play.

Owusu had an arthroscopic procedure on a knee, and Bowles said he would be sidelined "a week or two."

There were several other players who sat out in addition to Revis, Decker and Owusu, including guard Willie Colon (knee), running back Chris Ivory (quadriceps), linebackers Lorenzo Mauldin (concussion) and Trevor Reilly (infected finger), and cornerback Darrin Walls (hamstring).

Guard James Carpenter (back) was a limited participant in the team's first practice since it improved to 2-0.

If Revis can't play, that would be a big blow to a defense that has been stingy and opportunistic through the first two games. The Jets have 10 takeaways this season, just three less than they had all last season -- and Revis has four of them.

Quarterback Geno Smith fully practiced for the first time since having his jaw broken by a punch from then-teammate Ikemefuna Enemkpali on Aug. 11. Bowles said there's a chance Smith could be active Sunday to serve as Ryan Fitzpatrick's backup, but it would depend on whether Smith or rookie Bryce Petty had the better practice week.
