Report: Tony Romo will have clavicle surgery in March

Tony Romo has been contemplating undergoing surgery on his collarbone, and he reportedly has decided to move forward with the operation.

Dallas Cowboys beat reporter Clarence Hill reports that Romo will undergo surgery in two weeks.

Earlier on Wednesday, Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said no decision had been made and that they would await X-rays before making the call.

“We’ll make some decisions about what approach to take with him – whether we’re going to do the Mumford procedure, whether we’re going to put a plate in there or whether we’re going to do nothing,” Garrett said Wednesday via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “I think it’s important for us to see the X-Ray, and we’ll make some decisions from there.”

The Dallas Morning News reported Tuesday that the Mumford procedure was favored. That is a procedure which involves a bone being shaved, and it should result in less longterm discomfort than inserting a plate.

Romo only played in two full games last season after breaking his collarbone on two separate occasions. He also broke his clavicle in 2010.

The Cowboys held out hope of Romo returning late last season but they still feared a potential third broken collarbone if he did return. The projected recovery time from surgery is said to be 6-8 weeks.
