Report: Seahawks RB Lynch could be weighing retirement at season's end

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 1:57 p.m. ET

Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch is reportedly weighing the possibility of retiring after this year.

Lynch, 28, could leave football at the end of the 2014 season, NFL.com reports citing sources "with direct knowledge of Lynch's thinking." The report says that while Lynch has missed only one game in the last four years, he has battled back pain as cartilage in his spinal cord is compressed and causes him discomfort.

Although speculation has been rampant about Lynch's future with the organization all season, this would certainly change how he leaves the team and sport. According to the report, one caveat would be if offensive line coach Tom Cable were to get a head coaching job. In that case, Lynch might follow him.

Lynch reportedly also considered retiring last year if the Seahawks won the Super Bowl. After that victory, though, he returned to training camp for this season with a $6.5 million pay increase, according to the report.
