Report: Raiders paying Russell $3M

The Raiders are still paying for taking JaMarcus Russell with the top pick.

Oakland is paying close to $3 million in a settlement over his rookie contract, the San Francisco Chronicle is reporting.

Russell, who was waived by the Raiders three years after the team made him the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, signed a six-year, $68 million contract as a rookie. He finished his career in Oakland by completing just 52.1 percent of his attempts with 18 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. He compiled a 7-18 record as a starter and a 65.2 passer rating.

Russell battled weight issues during his time in Oakland. At one point, the 6-foot-6 quarterback tipped the scales at more than 300 pounds.

Despite his ineffectiveness in Oakland, the Raiders paid Russell $36.4 million but still owed him $3 million. The Raiders filed a grievance seeking to collect $9.55 million while Russell filed a grievance of his own in an attempt to gain an additional $9 million.

Before the two sides were set to go to court, they agreed on a settlement, according to the report.

Russell has reportedly lost close to 50 pounds and is trying to make a comeback.
