Report: Pats' Hernandez could miss time

Published Sep. 19, 2011 1:00 a.m. ET

New England Patriots second-year tight end Aaron Hernandez could be out of action for up to two weeks after suffering a medial collateral ligament (MCL) sprain, The Boston Globe reported Monday, citing a league source.

Hernandez suffered the sprain to his left knee during the Patriots' 35-21 victory over the San Diego Chargers on Sunday.

The former Florida standout took a helmet to the knee from Chargers safety Bob Sanders after catching a 12-yard pass in the fourth quarter.

Hernandez managed to take part in five more plays before leaving the game permanently. He was seen limping in the locker room after the game.

Hernandez, along with fellow tight end Rob Gronkowski, has become a critical piece to New England's high-powered offense. The pair combined for three touchdowns Sunday, with 11 catches and 148 yards. Hernandez also had a touchdown catch during the Patriots' Week 1 win over the Miami Dolphins.
