Report: Lions to put Stafford on IR

Published Dec. 24, 2010 12:00 a.m. ET

A rough season for the Detroit Lions just got rougher.

The 4-10 Lions will place former No. 1 overall draft pick Matthew Stafford on injured reserve, ensuring that he will not take another snap this season, MLive.com reported Friday.

Stafford suffered a Grade 3 right shoulder separation on Nov. 7 against the New York Jets. He threw six touchdowns and one interception in three starts this season but only finished one game. He started 10 games as a rookie.

Adding to the franchise's woes, backup Drew Stanton injured his shoulder last week in a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Shaun Hill will likely be the starting quarterback when the Lions plan the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, but head coach Jim Schwartz has said all week that a decision will not be announced until game time.
