Report: Jets owner Johnson breaks ankle

BY foxsports • March 21, 2011

Jets owner Woody Johnson said Monday he fractured his left ankle earlier this month when he was hit by a car while bicycling near his home in Palm Beach.

“I took on a car, and the car won,” Johnson said jokingly during a break in the NFL’s annual meeting in New Orleans.

Johnson had surgery to repair the injury March 11 and expects to remain on crutches for at least two months.

Doctors advised him not to fly for the time being, but Johnson said he felt these meetings -- overshadowed by the labor dispute and lockout -- were too important to miss.

Neither Johnson nor the Jets provided any more information about the accident other than to say it happened at low speed and to say the unidentified driver was at fault.

“A driver’s not supposed to hit bikes,” Johnson said when asked who caused the accident.

Johnson said he expects to be good as new by summer.

“It’s nothing,” he said. “Just a couple of months, and I’ll be good. My upper body will be big and my legs will be very skinny.”
