Report: Jay Culter reportedly out 2-3 weeks with thumb injury

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler is expected to miss two to three weeks with a sprained right thumb, reports NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.

According to the report, the timeline is dependent on how Cutler's thumb heals over the next week.

Cutler left Monday's 29–14 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles at the end of the third quarter and appeared to hurt his hand while fumbling earlier in the quarter when he fell to the ground and used his hand to brace for impact.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported Cutler originally sustained ligament damage to his right thumb during the Bears' season opener against the Houston Texans last week, and re-aggravated the injury against the Eagles.

Cutler said he was concerned about the injury after the game.

"You know, as a quarterback, you kind of need your right thumb. I think I was 12 or 11 when I had surgery on this thumb, so we'll see what it is," he said.

Cutler, 33, is due $16 million this season, the third season of a seven-year $126.7 million contract extension he signed in 2014.

Through two games this season, Cutler is completing 61% of his passes this season, with one touchdown, and two interceptions. He has been sacked a league-high eight times and his passer rating is 29th among qualified quarterbacks.
