Redskins sack Carson Wentz late to beat the Eagles
Washington running back Chris Thompson scored a 25-yard rushing touchdown with under two minutes to play and the Redskins defense shut down Carson Wentz in the red zone for a come-from-behind victory on the road that keeps their playoff hopes alive.
With a tight end serving as a backup long snapper, the Eagles kicked a field goal with 5:03 remaining to take a 22-21 lead, but the Redskins moved the ball 77-yards in just over three minutes. A crucial challenge reversed the call on the field on a 33-yard pass to Jamison Crowder that was initially ruled incomplete, and Thompson eventually gave Washington the lead with just his second rushing touchdown of the year.
Carson Wentz took over at his own 25 with 1:53 to play, to the rookie's credit he quickly moved the ball down the field and put the Eagles in position to win. Once the Eagles made it inside the red zone, however, the Philadelphia offensive line wasn't able to cope with the pressure. Wentz was forced to hurl a ball out of bounds while being rushed on first down, and one play later Wentz was sacked for the fourth time, fumbling the ball to end the game.
The win moves Washington to 7-5-1 on the season, with games left against the Panthers, Bears and Giants.
