Ravens' Webb: Still too young to switch to safety
Ravens coach John Harbaugh may be interested in seeing cornerback Lardarius Webb play more at safety. Webb, on the other hand is not too keen on the idea.
While he's open to helping out on the back line in the short term, the 30-year-old Webb still thinks he has plenty of good years left at corner before considering a move to safety.
“Maybe when I get old,” Webb said via the team's official website. “I’m not old yet, though. I think safety will suit me well, but I’m still a [darn] good corner. If you’re still a [darn] good corner, there aren’t too many of those in the league. You don’t take one of your best corners and put him at safety. You move him around, but you don’t just take him from one of the hardest positions to play and put him in the middle of the field.”
Webb picked off his first pass of the season while playing corner last Sunday against Jacksonville. Harbaugh thought it would be worth a look to see what he can do at safety in nickel situations, and liked what he saw.
“You watch ‘Webby’ and you watch how he plays, and we felt like he could be a factor in the backend as far as chasing balls and being a ball hawk,” Harbaugh said. “He may be kind of a natural that way.”
Webb agrees that playing safety is natural for him. After all, he played it throughout his college years at Nicholls State and Southern Mississippi. But right now, he prefers matching up one-on-one with his opponents.
“Not covering a guy one-on-one is easier to play, physically. It’s way easier to play,” he said. “I like challenges though. I like to play a little man-to-man against their best receiver.”
