Ravens TE Dennis Pitta hoping he's not leaving for good
While his Baltimore Ravens teammates said their goodbyes on Monday, Dennis Pitta couldn't help but think that he might be saying goodbye for good.
Pitta knows that his twice-surgically repaired hip could force him to retire, but he's still hoping he hasn't reached the end of the tunnel. He told reporters that he feels good physically, but just needs to weigh the risks against his long-term health.
"I certainly have a desire to play and want to play and want to be a part of this team moving forward. But we’ll see how it plays out.
"It’s not entirely my decision. I have a lot of weight in what my future holds, but [it is] not totally in my hands. We’ll give it some time this offseason, and I’ll certainly do some thinking and testing my body and hip, and we’ll see."
When Pitta was eligible to be activated off the physically unable to perform list in November, doctors advised him not to play, advice he nearly went against. The Ravens have plenty of young depth at tight end now with the emergence of Crockett Gillmore and the selection of Maxx Williams and Nick Boyle in last year's draft.
Pitta is under contract for three more seasons. If he does decide to play again, he'll certainly have to renegotiate his deal with a cap hit north of $7 million for next year, according to Spotrac.com.
Pitta caught 61 balls for 669 yards and seven touchdowns in 2012, his last full season in the league.
