Ravens' Jimmy Smith finally admits his injured foot slowed him down

Published Jan. 5, 2016 11:27 p.m. ET

Now that the season is over for the Baltimore Ravens, cornerback Jimmy Smith finally confirmed what many had suspected throughout the entire season -- his foot injury from 2014 slowed him down.

Smith never discussed his recovery from Lisfranc surgery throughout the season, refusing to use it as a crutch for a down performance. Those down performances were rather prominent in the first half of the season, when he surrendered big plays to Amari Cooper and A.J. Green in back-to-back weeks in September

The first month of the season basically served as Smith's preseason since the Ravens held him out of any game action until the regular season was underway. In his exit interviews with the media, Smith opened up about how the rust affected him, per the team's official website

"My foot was huge for me. I didn’t really realize how slow I was, or how much I couldn’t cut or burst until I really got into live action.

"You don’t train at all, so when you come back, you’re not yourself. It was rough for me. I haven’t really had to do deal with something that severe."

Smith certainly got better as the season progressed, and was rated as the NFL's sixth-best corner during the second half of the season, according to Pro Football Focus. He allowed just 151 yards on 25 targets over that span, a major improvement from the first half, when he yielded 461 yards on 56 targets.

"Towards the end of the season, I feel like I was starting to get back better. I just need to get some rest and get back to training like I usually train, and come back and dominate next season."

Smith is now looking forward to a full offseason program and getting back to being a shutdown corner in 2016.
