Predominantly Orange Week Four NFL Power Rankings
Week three brought dramatic change for this week. Who were the sharp risers and who fell off the cliff? It’s all in the Week Four NFL Power Rankings.
Week Three in the NFL—the week that seemed like it was going to be the easiest to predict turned out to be just as wild and crazy and any other week. Four teams in the top-10 got beat, and some upsets caused some extreme movement from lower teams. See where your team falls below in the Predominantly Orange Week Four NFL Power Rankings:
Sep 25, 2016; Cincinnati, OH, USA; Denver Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian (13) passes the ball passes the ball against Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Margus Hunt (99) in the second half at Paul Brown Stadium. Denver defeated the Cincinnati 29-17. Mandatory Credit: Mark Zerof-USA TODAY Sports
1. Denver Broncos (1)
I’ts hard to beat the Champs. The naysayers said that Siemian couldn’t do it on the road; Siemian couldn’t go deep; if the run game wasn’t working this team would fold. What happened Sunday was that Trevor Siemian became the first QB in NFL history to throw for more than 300 yards, 4 TD’s and 0 INT’s in his first road start—not bad for a seventh round pick. The Bengals hadn’t lost a home game in September in over 5 years—but it’s hard to beat the Champs.
Sep 22, 2016; Foxborough, MA, USA; New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett (7) celebrates a touchdown against the Houston Texans during the second half at Gillette Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports
2. New England Patriots (2)
At some point “Next Man Up” just can’t work right? Wrong! No Brady, No Garappolo, no Ninkovich, basically no Gronk—no problem. All they do is win, and win convincingly at that. However another week brings another injury as Jacoby Brissett has a thumb injury and may not be ready for week four. The good news is the Patriots have 10 days to get either Brissett or Garappolo back. If they can’t, it’ll be Edelman time at QB. Anybody plan to bet against them? Me either.
Sep 25, 2016; Charlotte, NC, USA; Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Linval Joseph (98) dives to tackle Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton (1) during the second quarter at Bank of America Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jim Dedmon-USA TODAY Sports
3. Minnesota Vikings (5)
More from Predominantly Orange
The Vikings are playing a fantastic brand of football right now. Their defense is the real deal, as they just went into Carolina and forced Cam Newton into his worst game since—well—the Super Bowl. Sam Bradford continues to look good and there is no reason to think that this team can’t make a run towards the Super Bowl—with or without Peterson.
Sep 25, 2016; Green Bay, WI, USA; Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers celebrates a first half touchdown pass against the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field. Mandatory Credit: William Glasheen/The Post-Crescent via USA TODAY Sports
4. Green Bay Packers (6)
The offense returned to Green Bay, as 31 first half points put the game essentially out of reach. The Lions did mount an impressive comeback, but at the end of the day the Packers moved to 2-1 in impressive fashion. The best news for Packer Fans—Jordy Nelson is back and looking like the Jordy of old. That bodes well for this team moving forward.
Sep 25, 2016; Seattle, WA, USA; Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson (3) is tackled by San Francisco 49ers outside linebacker Eli Harold (58) during the third quarter at CenturyLink Field. Wilson was injured on the play. The Seahawks won 37-18. Mandatory Credit: Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports
5. Seattle Seahawks (10)
The great news for the Seahawks is the offense finally got it turned up. The bad news is Russell Wilson is banged up. Word is that he has a strained MCL, but has no plans on missing any time. The problem is, if he isn’t right, he isn’t Russ. Wilson is what makes the Seahawks go, and without his mobility the Seahawks become more one dimensional. None of this will really matter if the Seahawks defense continues to play at the level they are at. It has been impressive thus far.
Sep 25, 2016; Jacksonville, FL, USA; Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco (5) throws the ball in the second half against the Jacksonville Jaguars at EverBank Field.Baltimore Ravens won 19-17. Mandatory Credit: Logan Bowles-USA TODAY Sports
6. Baltimore Ravens (6)
The Ravens are number six because they are 3-0. However, their competition this season is 1-8 so it’s hard to put too much into this. But 3-0 is 3-0, and good teams find a way to win, despite who they are playing.
Sep 25, 2016; Philadelphia, PA, USA; Philadelphia Eagles running back Wendell Smallwood (28) reacts after a touchdown run against the Pittsburgh Steelers during the third quarter at Lincoln Financial Field. Mandatory Credit: Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports
7. Philadelphia Eagles (18)
More from Predominantly Orange
This has been impressive. The Eagles didn’t just beat the Steelers, they dominated them on both sides of the ball. The rookie doesn’t look like a rookie in any way shape or form. Consider this—if Teddy Bridgewater doesn’t get hurt, there is no trade for Bradford and Carson Wentz is likely the third string quarterback.
Sep 25, 2016; Charlotte, NC, USA; Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton (1) is sacked by Minnesota Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen (97) in the fourth quarter. The Vikings defeated the Panthers 22-10 at Bank of America Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports
8. Carolina Panthers (4)
The Panthers are still a very good football team. However, elite defenses give them troubles—see the last two games against the Broncos, now a home loss to the Vikings. They are still the best team in their division, and perhaps this can be chalked up to a bad day. Either way, figuring out a way to score against a top notch defense has to slide to the top of their list of things to improve upon.
Sep 25, 2016; Philadelphia, PA, USA; Philadelphia Eagles strong safety Malcolm Jenkins (27) breaks up the pass attempt to Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown (84) during the second quarter at Lincoln Financial Field. Mandatory Credit: Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports
9. Pittsburgh Steelers (3)
Was it unthinkable to think that the Eagles could win a home game against the Steelers? No—but what NOBODY saw coming was a complete domination on both sides of the ball by the Eagles. The Steelers couldn’t run, they were bogged down in the passing game, and they couldn’t stop the Eagles all day long. This doesn’t help a Steelers team trying to keep up with the Broncos and Patriots in the AFC. The good news for the Steelers? Reinforcements are on the way on offense as LeVeon Bell’s suspension is now served.
Sep 25, 2016; Cincinnati, OH, USA; Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton (14) is sacked by the Denver Broncos defense in the second half at Paul Brown Stadium. Denver defeated the Cincinnati 29-17. Mandatory Credit: Mark Zerof-USA TODAY Sports
10. Cincinnati Bengals (8)
More from Predominantly Orange
Losing to the Broncos is not the worst thing in the world—but being 1-2 is concerning for a Cincinnati team that has lost their first game in the playoffs the past 5 seasons. Going on the road in the playoffs and winning is a tough task for a team that cannot seem to get over the hump, so every victory counts for this team.
Sep 25, 2016; Orchard Park, NY, USA; Arizona Cardinals kicker Chandler Catanzaro (7) watches the play from the sideline during the second half against the Buffalo Bills at New Era Field. Bills beat the Cardinals 33-18. Mandatory Credit: Timothy T. Ludwig-USA TODAY Sports
11. Arizona Cardinals (7)
What’s wrong with Carson Palmer? Aside from a week two gem against the Buccaneers that cannot seem to stop anyone, he hasn’t seemed right since the beginning of the playoffs last year. Interceptions are a huge problem for him, and will be the demise of this team if it keeps up. Were the playoffs a season ago the true beginning of the end for Palmer? Stay tuned.
Sep 25, 2016; Kansas City, MO, USA; Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce (87) dives in for a touchdown as New York Jets cornerback Marcus Williams (20) attempts the tackle during the first half at Arrowhead Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports
12. Kansas City Chiefs (13)
The Chiefs have been a bit Jeckyl and Hyde this season—from game-to-game and even within single games. Sunday they forced Ryan Fitzpatrick into six interceptions—yes six. When the Chiefs secondary is playing like that, they are very hard to beat.
Sep 25, 2016; Nashville, TN, USA; Tennessee Titans receiver Andre Johnson (81) attempts to catch the ball as Oakland Raiders cornerback David Amerson (29) defends during the second half at Nissan Stadium. The Raiders won 17-10. Mandatory Credit: Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports
13. Oakland Raiders (14)
The good news is the Raiders defense finally showed up and looked the way they are supposed to. The bad news was it was only done against the Titans. You can only play who is on your schedule, but a good defensive outing against a quality offense is something this team needs to show. Sunday was a good start, and the Raiders are 2-1—It’s not a bad start for the Black and Silver.
Sep 25, 2016; Arlington, TX, USA; Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott (21) and quarterback Dak Prescott (4) talk with NBC sideline reporter Michele Tafoya after the game against the Chicago Bears at AT&T Stadium. Dallas won 31-17. Mandatory Credit: Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports
14. Dallas Cowboys (17)
More from Predominantly Orange
The Cowboys have a lot to be excited about. Dak Prescott put in another strong, steady performance, and Elliott busted out in a big way. Romo is either going to come back to a decent situation, or he’s gonna come back to a backup roll. Either way, the Cowboys are in far better shape this season to absorb his injury problems then they have been in years past.
Sep 25, 2016; Indianapolis, IN, USA; Indianapolis Colts wide receiver T.Y. Hilton (13) catches a pass and scores the winning touchdown late in the 4th quarter against the San Diego Chargers at Lucas Oil Stadium. Indianapolis defeats San Diego 26-22. Mandatory Credit: Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports
15. Indianapolis Colts (19)
It wasn’t easy, but the Colts finally put together a win. Beating a Chargers team at home isn’t anything to make anyone think the Colts are ready to compete for the ultimate prize, but it is a step in the right direction. To take the next step, they are going to need some reinforcements in the secondary.
Sep 18, 2016; Glendale, AZ, USA; Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson (31) breaks the tackle of Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Vernon Hargreaves (28) during the second half at University of Phoenix Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports
16. New York Jets (12)
Six Interceptions. Six Interceptions. Six Interceptions. Six Interceptions. Six Interceptions. Six Interceptions. Saying it six times shows just how bad it was. No team can do that and expect to win. Fitzpatrick went from brilliant one week, to this the next. What is he going to do next week?
Sep 22, 2016; Foxborough, MA, USA; Houston Texans quarterback Brock Osweiler (17) makes a pass during the third quarter against the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports
17. Houston Texans (11)
The Texans must have thought they played on Sunday this week because that was one of the worst performances they could have possibly delivered Thursday night. The early returns on Osweiler haven’t been promising considering how much they are paying him, and Watt is having the worst season of his career thus far. There’s a lot of time left, but this Houston team was supposed to compete this year. Right now, they look like pretenders.
Sep 25, 2016; East Rutherford, NJ, USA; New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. (13) and Washington Redskins corner back Josh Norman (24) talk after a game at MetLife Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports
18. New York Giants (15)
It is never dull when Odell Beckham gets to match up with Josh Norman. Something about Norman gets under the star receivers skin and makes him do things like this:
What's more embarrassing OBJ, losing to the Redskins or a kicking net? https://t.co/45leasQhG3
— Full Count Sports (@fullcount_news) September 26, 2016
The Redskins may have the mental edge over the Giants for this very reason.
Sep 26, 2016; New Orleans, LA, USA; Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan (2) throws the ball against the New Orleans Saints during the first quarter of a game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Mandatory Credit: Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports
19. Atlanta Falcons (20)
More from Predominantly Orange
The Falcons are a very talented team in year two of Kyle Shanahan’s system. The undoing of this team will be the defense, as they have no way of pressuring the quarterback. Through three games they have a whopping three sacks. When they aren’t carving up a Saints defense that would struggle against a college team, will their defense be able to keep them in the game? This is the question that Dan Quinn will need to answer.
Sep 25, 2016; Orchard Park, NY, USA; Buffalo Bills running back Mike Gillislee (35) runs with the ball during the first half against the Arizona Cardinals at New Era Field. Mandatory Credit: Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports
20. Buffalo Bills (23)
This showing by the Bills must make their fans even more frustrated. If they are capable of playing at this level, why can’t they do it week in and week out? Rex Ryan may not be the best head coach, but his players do play hard for him when his job is in limbo. Can they keep it up and get back in to the AFC East conversation? We shall see.
Sep 25, 2016; East Rutherford, NJ, USA; Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins (8) throws the ball during the first half against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports
21. Washington Redskins (28)
You like that? Finally, Kirk Cousins can say that again. The Skins provided a gutty performance and kept themselves at least in the thick of things, as they try to repeat as division champions. Does Kirk have the locker room back on his side? One would hope so—the bigger question however—why did they turn on him after two games in the first place?
Sep 25, 2016; Tampa, FL, USA; Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley (30) stiff arms Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Vernon Hargreaves (28) during the second half at Raymond James Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports
22. Los Angeles Rams (24)
More from Predominantly Orange
After two games the Rams still hadn’t scored a TD. Sunday, they popped off for 37 points. If you are going to tell me you thought the Rams would be 2-1 after their week one debacle, you are lying through your teeth. Nevertheless, they are 2-1, and things seem to be trending in the right direction for the Rams who sit atop the NFC West.
Sep 25, 2016; Tampa, FL, USA; Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston (3) runs the ball during the first half against the Los Angeles Rams at Raymond James Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jonathan Dyer-USA TODAY Sports
23. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (16)
One thing is for certain; offense is not going to be the problem for the young Bucs. This defense is just horrid right now, allowing a rams team that had scored 9 points in their first two games 37 points. Yikes. Mother nature didn’t help the Bucs out in any way, as a long lightning delay probably halted any chance they had to come back. Things don’t get any easier for Famous Jameis and Co. next week as the defending champions come to town.
Sep 25, 2016; Indianapolis, IN, USA; San Diego Chargers receiver Travis Benjamin (12) makes a reception over Indianapolis Colts corner back Darryl Morris (35) at Lucas Oil Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Thomas J. Russo-USA TODAY Sports
24. San Diego Chargers (21)
As has been the case in every game they’ve played this year, they were right there. Putting themselves in a position to win, and actually winning are two different things—winning will push them up these rankings—close but no cigar is not good enough in this league.
25. Miami Dolphins (27)
More from Predominantly Orange
Lets not kid around here—the Dolphins should have lost the game, to the Browns, on their third string QB, at home. Somehow, someway the Browns foiled this game. Since nearly defeating the Seahawks in Seattle, the Dolphins have looked like a bottom five team—not exactly what Adam Gase was hoping for when he got here. A win is still a win in the NFL, so regardless of how it happened, the Dolphins have a check in the W column.
Sep 25, 2016; Seattle, WA, USA; Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin (89) catches a pass for a first down during the first quarter in a game against the San Francisco 49ers at CenturyLink Field. Mandatory Credit: Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports
26. San Francisco 49ers (26)
Since shutting out the Rams in week one, the Niners defense has allowed 46 and 37 points respectively. That’s more or less what we all expected coming into the season. The offensive production has gone down each week as well. Is it Kaepernick time in SF yet?
Sep 25, 2016; Jacksonville, FL, USA; Jacksonville Jaguars running back Chris Ivory (33) is brought down by Baltimore Ravens strong safety Eric Weddle (32) during the second half of a football game at EverBank FieldThe Baltimore Ravens won 19-17. Mandatory Credit: Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports
27. Jacksonville Jaguars (22)
Good offense, highly upgraded defense, good coach; this was supposed to be the year for the Jaguars. Some things may never change as the Jags fall to 0-3. The only good thing for the Jags is that they play in the worst division in football. If there is a chance to recover from an 0-3 start, this would be the division to be in, but the comeback needs to start now.
Sep 25, 2016; Green Bay, WI, USA; Detroit Lions wide receiver Marvin Jones (11) celebrates a touchdown catch during the fourth quarter against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. Green Bay won 34-27. Mandatory Credit: Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports
28. Detroit Lions (25)
Offense certainly isn’t the problem in Detroit. Allowing 31 first half points, on the other hand, is not exactly a recipe for success. Marvin Jones was incredible, putting up Megatron-like numbers in the second half. It was too little, and too late at this point however and the Lions dropped to 1-2.
Sep 25, 2016; Nashville, TN, USA; Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota (8) throws the ball against the Oakland Raiders during the second half at Nissan Stadium. The Raiders won 17-10. Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports
29. Tennessee Titans (29)
The Titans actually did a good job keeping the Raiders offense in check. Turnovers ultimately doomed them as they only put up 10 points on a defense that was scorched in the first two weeks of the season. That’s not going to get it done.
Sep 25, 2016; Miami Gardens, FL, USA; Cleveland Browns kicker Cody Parkey (3) reacts after missing a field goal during the second half against the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium. The Miami Dolphins defeat the Cleveland Browns 34-20 in overtime. Mandatory Credit: Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports
30. Cleveland Browns (32)
More from Predominantly Orange
How the Browns lost this game is a mystery. The defense did their job, setting up the Browns for an easy kick to win the game. In typical Browns fashion, they managed to screw up a decent debut by rookie Cody Kessler. Keeping RGIII over Carson Wentz is probably the most Browns thing they could have possibly done. Thank goodness for the City of Cleveland that LeBron plays basketball there.
Sep 26, 2016; New Orleans, LA, USA; New Orleans Saints defensive back Roman Harper (41) is called for a horse collar tackle penalty as he tackles Atlanta Falcons running back Tevin Coleman (26) is during the first quarter of a game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Mandatory Credit: Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports
31. New Orleans Saints (30)
The Saints defense is an absolute abomination—yes it’s that bad. There are high school players that could run for 100 yards through these gaping holes. Yes, Drew Brees and the offense will keep them in some games, but at 0-3, having a defense that allows touchdowns on a majority of drives, they are going nowhere very fast.
Sep 25, 2016; Arlington, TX, USA; Chicago Bears running back Jeremy Langford (33) runs with the ball for a short gain against Dallas Cowboys safety Byron Jones (31) at AT&T Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports
32. Chicago Bears (31)
The Bears got waxed in every phase of the game Sunday. Rookie Dak Prescott and rookie Ezekiel Elliott looked like seasoned veterans. The Bears are the worst team in football. Certainly, John Fox was pleased with this effort—it doesn’t take much to please Coach Fox.
