Pairing of Kelvin Benjamin and Devin Funchess creates matchup nightmare

Published May. 4, 2015 12:24 p.m. ET

After the Carolina Panthers used their first pick in the 2014 NFL draft to bring in a towering and talented target for Cam Newton, Dave Gettleman was back at it again in the 2015 draft.

There were rumors that had the Panthers potentially taking a wide receiver in the first round of this year's draft, but instead the team went with their best player available, Shaq Thompson. Carolina didn't wait long to jump up and grab a receiver though, as they worked a trade with the St. Louis Rams to move from No. 57 in the second round to No. 41 to land Devin Funchess from Michigan.

The addition of Funchess may create matchup issues for teams across the entire NFL. As Ty Schalter from Bleacher Report put it, the Panthers are creating a "basketball on turf look." Last year's first round pick, Kelvin Benjamin, is listed at 6'5", while Funchess is 6'4". Putting those two on the field at the same time has the potential to make Cam Newton's life a whole lot easier, especially if Funchess pans out how Carolina believes he will.

Carolina had to give their second round, third round and sixth round pick to move up, according to Marc Sessler of NFL.com, so the team obviously is very high on the former Wolverine.
