NFL Rumors: 49ers Trying to Move LT Joe Staley Before Trade Deadline, per Report

Pro Football Talk is reporting the San Francisco 49ers are trying to move left tackle Joe Staley prior to the November 1 NFL trade deadline.

At 1-6, it’s clear the San Francisco 49ers are going to try and be sellers at the NFL trade deadline this season.

And, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, one player the Niners might be trying to move is veteran left tackle Joe Staley.

Florio hinted the Niners were trying to move Staley, and the Cleveland Browns were trying to move left tackle Joe Thomas as well. Florio wrote:

In addition to Browns left tackle Joe Thomas, 49ers left tackle Joe Staley also could be had in trade.

Staley, drafted in the same round (first) of the same draft (2007) as Thomas, has been tied to the same teams that have some degree of interest in Thomas: Vikings, Giants, Cardinals, Seahawks and, if the 49ers are willing to take whatever they can get, the Patriots.

While the Browns would deal Thomas for a second-round pick, a source with knowledge of the dynamics tells PFT the 49ers are angling for a first-round pick from a contender for Staley, which likely would come late in the round.

Staley, 32 years old, has played each of his 10 seasons with San Francisco after being drafted in Round 1 of the 2007 NFL Draft. He’s made the Pro Bowl each year dating back to 2010.

Such a move makes sense for a Niners squad lacking talent and in need of as many draft picks as they can get. It’s unlikely Staley would be an effective cornerstone the next time San Francisco is relevant again.

Staley is signed through 2019, and his cap hit jumps to $11,150,000 next season, per Over the Cap.

The NFL trade deadline is on Tuesday, November 1 at 4 p.m. ET.
