New York Jets: Brandon Marshall Hopes to Stay Next Season

The New York Jets might be heading toward an offseason of change. One player that doesn’t want to leave is wide receiver Brandon Marshall.

The 2016 season has been a huge disappointment for the New York Jets. After just missing the playoffs in 2015, the Jets have a 3-8 record after 11 games. The poor season for the Jets might lead to a lot of change this offseason.

While the quarterback position will be the most-talked about position for the Jets, the organization might look to save money elsewhere. Wide receiver Brandon Marshall has played well for the Jets, but he is going to be turning 33-years-old in March.

“Obviously, I have no plans on retiring. No plans on switching teams. I would love to stay here and retire a Jet. But I have to keep focusing on what I can control.

If the Jets did make the bold decision to trade or release Marshall, they would save themselves $7.5 million. For a team that doesn’t have a ton of salary cap and a lot of issues, parting ways with Marshall isn’t the craziest idea. Marshall has bounced around throughout his career, and he is well aware that there is no job security in the NFL.

“I rather stay away from that type of question,” Marshall said to Connor Hughes of NJ.com. “Obviously, that’s a way a team can go. As of right now, we’re still in this season with this group of guys. I’ll choose to focus on that. I don’t want to really deal with the what-ifs.

Due to the fact that Marshall is a veteran, playing on a contender, next season might be appealing to him. As of now, he is focused on helping the Jets win games this season.

“It’s a fair question to ask me about my future like I said, it comes with the territory, this type of environment. But to continue to go down this path of, ‘is this guy going to be here,’ or ‘is this guy going to be here,’ I don’t think that’s fair to me. I don’t think that’s fair to anybody in this organization who puts so much into this every single day to try to deliver.”

While the Jets plan for the offseason is still uncertain, we do know there will be a lot of change. After what will surely be a poor season when the next five games are over, the Jets will have to go to the drawing board. Some of those offseason decisions might be involving veteran players like Marshall.
