New Chargers safety Wilson working with starters at practice

Eric Weddle's contract situation isn't the only safety-related battle being waged at Chargers Park.

First-year Bolt Jimmy Wilson has seized the lead for San Diego's starting strong safety spot, according to ESPN. The fifth-year vet has taken snaps alongside Weddle over candidates like Jahleel Addae.

The Chargers still value Addae, who has subbed in as a nickel and dime safety. Wilson could be viewed as a more reliable coverage option, though -- someone who can compensate for Weddle when he inches up to make tackles.

Defensive coordinator John Pagano has maintained this battle will extend into the summer to evaluate both candidates. But for right now, Wilson appears to be the front-runner to replace departed Marcus Gilchrist as Weddle's safety-mate.
