Mike Pettine getting more involved with Browns' offense

Now that Browns coach Mike Pettine has a new offensive coordinator with a new system, he's decided to take a more active role in the offense.
Pettine, a lifelong defensive coach, entrusted his offense to Kyle Shanahan in his first year as head coach last season. Now that he's spending time working on concepts with new coordinator John DeFilippo, he's enjoying every minute of it.
"I feel very rejuvenated as a coach to be in there and be a part of it," Pettine told the team's official site. "Flip (DeFilippo) and I are very much on the same page with where this offense is headed. I’m real excited to be a part of it."
Pettine says he will continue working with DeFilippo into the season, helping his first-year coordinator adjust to the different defensive schemes throughout the league.
"I have a good feel for NFL defenses having studied a lot of them," Pettine said. "Knowing the coaching trees and different styles and different rules – I think that’s where I can be beneficial."
While the system may change, the Browns' offensive philosophy will remain the same despite the NFL becoming more and more pass-happy. Pettine doesn't plan on throwing the ball 50 times per game, instead relying more on the run game with Terrance West, Isaiah Crowell and rookie Duke Johnson.
"It’s a formula that’s not the most common path,” Pettine said. "People still try to be quarterback driven. I’m not saying we are going to be looking to win games 9-6. We still want to be explosive on offense. We just don’t want to put our quarterback in situations where the percentages aren't there."
