Merriman limps off during practice

Published Nov. 10, 2010 7:29 p.m. ET

Buffalo Bills linebacker Shawne Merriman has limped off the field with a lower right leg injury shortly after opening his first practice with his new team.

Claimed off waivers by Buffalo last week, the former San Diego Chargers star pass-rusher was hurt during an individual drill a half-hour into practice Wednesday. After taking a few steps back, Merriman took a pivot step when he hopped in the air in pain.

Merriman limped to the sideline where a trainer spent a few minutes checking the player's ankle before escorting him off the field.

Merriman had been sidelined this season with a left calf injury.
