Marshawn Lynch granted trademark to famous 'fined' quip

Marshawn Lynch now is the reported owner of a trademark to the phrase, “I’m just here so I won’t get fined,” a remark made famous by the Seattle Seahawks running back by repeatedly invoking it during his dealings with the media leading up to Super Bowl XLIX.

Darren Rovell reports that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office this week granted Lynch the trademark to the phrase. Lynch already has been profiting from the phrase by selling shirts for $34 that bear the quip via his BeastMode product line.

Lynch now owns four trademarks, including one for BeastMode, but abandoned a trademark request just this week for “About That Action Boss,” something he said to Deion Sanders during Super Bowl XLIX Media Day.

The media-averse running back reportedly was threatened with a $500,000 fine if he failed to show up for media day, setting the stage for Lynch to utter the line that explained the sole reason he elected to show up.

Lynch last season was fined $100,000 for his refusal to comply with the NFL’s player availability policies as it pertains to the media. He also reached a reported settlement with the NFL earlier this year over a $75,000 fine he received after he avoided the media following the Seahawks’ win over the Green Bay Packers in last season’s NFC Championship Game.

Lynch has endured an injury-hampered season coming off his infamous antics during the buildup to last February’s Super Bowl, playing in only seven games before undergoing surgery for a sports hernia. He last played in a game on Nov. 15, but reports out of Seattle indicate Lynch could return to Seahawks practice as early as this week.
