Le'Veon Bell on Landry Jones: 'Like Ben's little brother'

Two touchdowns and a victory over the Arizona Cardinals were enough for Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Landry Jones to win over running back Le’Veon Bell.

After replacing an injured and ineffective Mike Vick in the second half Sunday, Jones completed 8 of 12 passes for 169 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown to put the Steelers up in the third quarter and an 88-yard score to Martavius Bryant to put the finishing touch on Pittsburgh’s 25-13 win.

Bell, who rushed for 88 yards rushing, compared Jones to injured starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

“It was really like Ben’s little brother out there,” Bell said, via Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. “It kind of brought us back like, ‘Dang, Landry has really got this.'”

Jones had to save the day after Vick struggled to get anything going against the Cardinals. The Steelers punted on five of their first seven possession with Vick under center. Through the first two and a half quarters, Vick had completed just three passes for six yards.

Jones threw a touchdown on his second attempt of the game to give the Steelers a 12-10 lead. After back-to-back drives ending in field goals, Jones hit Bryant on an underneath route on the second play of the Steelers’ 11th possession. Pittsburgh’s second-year receiver did the rest, racing 88 yards for the game-clinching score with under two minutes to play.

A fourth-round pick of the Steelers in 2013, Jones had not played a single down in the NFL before Sunday.

“I thought he did such a good job of running the offense,” Roethlisberger said, via Ron Cook of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. “He knows it. He’s been here how many years? He’s really, really smart. Above the shoulders, he’s as good as it gets. He puts the extra work in. He puts the time in, the effort. That’s what good backups do.”

The Steelers haven’t named a starter for Week 7’s matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs. If Roethlisberger can’t go, at least Pittsburgh has his little brother to lean on.
