Josh Brown will be placed on commissioner's exempt list

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Kicker Josh Brown will be placed on the comissioner’s exempt list and is unlikely to play for the Giants again, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports.

The league formally announced the move shortly after the report.

The Giants said on Thursday that Brown would not play in Sunday’s game after he admitted to being abusive toward his wife, Molly, in documents released Wednesday to the media. Brown was suspended for the first game of this season for violating a protective order against his wife in 2015.

Only commissioner Roger Goodell can place a player on the exempt list. It would mean that Brown is still an unpaid employee of the Giants, but wouldn’t count against the roster, opening up a spot for the team to sign a new player.

Coach Ben McAdoo said on Friday, “We’re not going to turn our back on Josh. He’s a teammate and a guy we’re hoping makes strides.”
