John Elway might've gotten a steal in Lorenzo Doss

John Elway is one of the best when it comes to landing key contributors in the later rounds.

He might've outdone himself with his latest fifth-round flier on Lorenzo Doss.

The 5-foot-10 corner isn't from a football factory like LSU or Alabama. He was a sprinter for Tulane, though, and when he steps on the football field, he brings some fast-twitch skills to the Green Wave.

Watch Doss against Rutgers. He sticks with receivers step-for-step, and when the ball is in the air, he closes better than the guy he's covering.

Doss isn't going to outmuscle NFL-sized receivers for the ball. He'll need to rely on that quickness and closing speed to carve out a spot in the loaded Denver secondary.

He's probably best suited as nickel corner because he can stick with smaller, shiftier wideouts. And when the ball goes their way, Doss high-points it like a veteran, like he did against Louisiana Tech.

Wade Phillips did wonders with a player who boasted a similar skillset out of Boise State. Now, Orlando Scandrick is a top-25 NFL cover man.

The Broncos must think Doss has some upside. That's why Elway made the DB the 164th pick overall. Doss could repay the favor by making Elway's draft record look even better.
