Jets rookie WR Devin Smith out for season with torn ACL

New York Jets rookie wide receiver Devin Smith suffered a knee injury in the third quarter of Sunday's game against the Tennessee Titans and was carted off the field after he was unable to put any pressure on his right leg. On Monday, Todd Bowles confirmed the worst and announced that Smith suffered a torn ACL and will likely be placed on season-ending injured reserve.
Smith struggled to get acclimated to the speed and complexity of the NFL early in the season but had been coming on of late. He scored his first career touchdown two weeks ago against the Miami Dolphins.
"He was grasping everything mentally and was playing faster. ... It's unfortunate that this happened because he came around," Bowles said. "He was really going to help us."
On the year, Smith has caught nine passes for 115 yards and one touchdown. He and the Jets had high expectations after drafting him in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft, but it was somewhat of a lost season for the young wide receiver. He'll look to recover and rehab in time for training camp and the start of the 2016 season.
