Jets DL Muhammad Wilkerson suffers broken leg in season-ending loss

Published Jan. 3, 2016 5:19 p.m. ET

Not only were the New York Jets eliminated from playoff contention in heart-breaking fashion on Sunday, but they lost one of their best defenders to a serious injury. Free-agent-to-be Muhammad Wilkerson was carted off the field in the second half on Sunday after suffering an apparent leg injury.

After the game, Todd Bowles revealed that Wilkerson suffered a broken leg.

It obviously doesn't affect the Jets season as it's now over after Sunday's loss, but it could impact his availability in the upcoming season. The Jets have to make a decision on whether or not to re-sign him in the offseason with this injury possibly playing a role in that going forward.

He had a career-best season, recording 12 sacks. He'll be a high-priority free agent in the offseason, especially after his great year. Hopefully this unfortunate injury doesn't affect that.
