Jets' Cortland facilities unaffected by storm

Published Aug. 9, 2013 11:03 p.m. ET

SUNY Cortland facilities used by the New York Jets for training camp were not damaged by powerful storms that dumped heavy rain on central New York and caused widespread flooding.

While some roads in neighboring Cortland and Tompkins counties were washed out Thursday night by several inches of floodwater in some areas, SUNY Cortland spokesman Fred Pierce said the university was largely unaffected other than a few ''basement issues.'' None of the major buildings or practice fields used by the Jets were flooded.

In a statement Friday, Pierce said the fields are ''in good condition and ready for camp to resume'' when the team returns to practice Sunday. The Jets were in Detroit for their preseason opener Friday night.

The team has held training camp in Cortland every year since 2009, except the labor lockout year in 2011 when the Jets had camp at their practice facility in Florham Park, N.J.

The storms caused Cortland County officials to issue a ban against unnecessary travel until Friday morning, when roads were gradually re-opened. While there were no immediate reports of injuries, about 70 residents of an assisted-living facility were evacuated Thursday night because of flooding.

Some residents tweeted pictures of a few businesses in Cortland, including a Walmart supercenter off Route 13, that appeared to have been affected by a few inches of water.
