Jay Cutler tries to clarify wife's comments about Chicago

If Jay Cutler didn’t have an acrimonious relationship with Chicago Bears fans already, comments recently made by wife Kristin Cavallari that seemingly illuminated the couple’s unfavorable disposition about living in the Windy City made it that much worse, leaving the quarterback in a position where he had to defend his wife and extoll the virtues of living in the town.

Cavallari said in an interview with Elle magazine that the couple intends to move to Nashville once Cutler’s career in Chicago is finished, adding, “Jay hates L.A. And Chicago’s just not home.”

Those comments likely irked some Chicagoans, so Cutler went into damage control mode in an interview with ESPN’s Michael Rothstein, via the Chicago Tribune.

“We have family in Chicago,” Cutler said at a quarterbacks camp at the University of Michigan on Saturday. “We have a house in Chicago. Our roots are in Chicago.

“We love being there.”

While that may indeed be the case and that Cutler and Cavallari are enjoying their time in Chi-Town, the quarterback’s time with the Bears has been an unmitigated disaster. The fact that he initially appeared to have failed to impress the Bears’ new regime, including head coach John Fox, only makes it seem that had he a choice, Cutler would be perfectly fine saying goodbye to Chicago and starting over — again — in another NFL city.

It’s worth noting, though, that Cutler isn’t the first NFL player who has felt compelled to defend his wife in the media. Just last season, New York Jets wide receiver Eric Decker had to go into damage control mode on more than one occasion after wife Jessie James Decker’s fiery social media missives rankled the team’s fans.
